In Luke 6, Jesus has defined the secret to a blessed life. He says love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. Then your reward will be great, and you will be called children of the Most High. In other words, Jesus is saying, Be Generous, and your reward is blessedness — to be known as the child of the master and creator of the entire universe.
I have tested this teaching of Jesus, though it sounds counter intuitive. And like my experience of learning how to swim, the hard part is getting yourself into the water. What I did was to slowly wet my feet, then my legs, then my body, and as the training passed, I found myself floating, swimming, and fast. Once you experience ‘blessedness’, you will begin to comprehend the mystery of why generosity is the key to unlocking it. This is no rocket science needed to understand this. To be generous is becoming like our God, Jesus even modeled it for us while he was on earth. And becoming like him, is giving glory to him. It’s like my kids being complimented by people, and say “you are just like your Dad.” Now, that makes me feel proud.
Other people learned how to swim, by just jumping into the water. And they learned faster and better than I did.
